One of the privileges the Lord continues to allow me to experience is coming alongside friends and families who are walking through seasons of sickness.   In those moments, words often fail.  And the reality is the power of presence and God’s Word often times bring the most encouragement in the midst of these seasons.

Here are ten verses from the Bible that serve as both encouragements and reminders when walking through a season of sickness.

  1. As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. John 9:1-3
  2. But when Jesus heard it he said, “This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” John 11:4
  3. …that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,… Philippians 3:10
  4. It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I might learn your statutes. Psalm 119:71
  5. “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. John 15:1-2
  6. Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. James 1:12
  7. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. Romans 8:8
  8. Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. 1 Peter 4:10
  9. …declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose,... Isaiah 46:10
  10. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. James 5:15-16
